Have you got Pumpkin Spice in your drink today? Indulge me for a sec, what came to mind when I asked you that?
This has a point about big biz vs you, the small biz owner and I’m getting to it so keep reading!
Big Business has this way of being everywhere all at once. I’m not going to name names, but you know them, they’re so pervasive all you have to do is say something like pumpkin spice and you pretty much know what I’m talking about.
Same with other big business brands in eCommerce.
The thing about big brands and all the money they spend on marketing means that you pretty much know what you want to know about them *before* you hit their website. The connection they form with you is on *their* terms. They’re creating the culture around their product.

and you’re going to their online space to be immersed in that aspirational, exciting thing that you’re already interested and invested in. That pair of shoes. That shiny tech. You know exactly what I mean. What I’m saying is that you can’t build your website like they do.
What I’m saying is that you can’t build your website like they do.
It’s not going to work because you’re not pouring millions of dollars into marketing and creating a worldwide culture around your product.
So when people come to your website you can’t just hit them with images and no context. You can’t be vague. You can’t be mysterious. That won’t work for your small biz. You need to create connection and context for your customers.
They need to know who you are/what you sell and why it matters to them. We’re not talking about being bland or overly obvious here. We’re talking about using words and images together that speak about the benefits of your products or services in a way that gets right down to your customer’s needs. You need to use enough words to create a connection, but not too many that you start to lose people to skimming.
To do this, you need to know your customers really well. When you know them and you can communicate that you get them, it is win-win. Your customers get what they want/need with a great shopping experience and you get consistent sales.
